The International Association of Lions Clubs

The International Association of Lions Clubs is the world's largest and most effective community service organization, with more than 1.4 million members and 40,000 clubs in approximately 180 countries and areas. Regardless of what language they speak, religion they practice or politics they espouse, all Lions are dedicated to seeking out and helping those in need.
The association was founded in 1917 by a Chicago insurance agent named Melvin Jones who convinced his luncheon club, the Business Circle of Chicago, that it should ally itself with other independent clubs to form a national organization. 36 delegates from 22 clubs attended a convention and approved the "Lions Clubs" designation. Community leaders soon began to organize clubs throughout the United States. The association became "International" in 1920 with the formation of a club in Windsor, Ontario, Canada.
Lions are recognized worldwide for their service to the blind and visually impaired with their international SightFirst project. A project aimed at nothing less than the elimination of preventable and reversible blindness around the world. Other major service activities of Lions Clubs International include:
Sight conservation and work with the Blind
Hearing and Speech Action and Work with the Deaf
    Environmental Services
    The Leo Club Program
    Youth Exchange
    Medic Alert
    International Relations
